Appearance: As Shadow: form-fitting body suit of dark gray silk with a second, looser layer of lighter gray silk. The third layer of silk is somewhere in between the other two shades and is really just one long veil wound about Shadow's torso and arms with the two ends knotted at the waist. Gray gloves and gray boots wrapped in more silk. Also wears a hood and mask made of the same material that only leaves Shadow's eyes exposed, the rest of Shadow's body is completely covered with gray silk making it impossible to determine what Shadow really looks like.
As Tsuki Anei: normally a gray silk kimono with gray slippers. She wears her family crest, a wyrm circled around a dove, on a silver cord around her throat.

Background: Tsuki Anei is the illegitimate daughter of Mikari Hisama and a young healer, Ayame Tsugine. An older man who already had a fifteen year old son, Mikari had no interest in his daughter and allowed the infant to remain with her mother in Wutai. Ayame's family held distant ties to the clan that once served the Dragoness Valitra, the gaurdian of the Spirit and of Life, so Tsuki was raised in the old ways and was trained a healer.

Word eventually reached them of Mikari's death and when Ayame died the following year during a storm, the eleven year old girl thought herself alone in the world. However, several months later a group of young men came and all but kidnapped her from her home, spiriting her away from Wutai to meet the brother she never knew she had. Confused, but grateful for Sierra's kindness in providing for her and raising her, Tsuki developed a very strong attachment to her older brother. In her eyes, Sierra became both a father figure and her best friend while the 26 year old heir to the Hisama name developed a deep affection for the young child.

Wishing to help her brother and not fully realizing where his plans would eventually lead them, Tsuki trained herself to master her inate abilities in order to serve him better. Along with her gifts as a healer, Tsuki inherited the ability to manipulate shadows and darkness from her mother's line. With this talent, Tsuki Anei can open portals within any true shadows, allowing her to travel through a shadow realm and cross great distances in a matter of seconds. This made her invaluable as a spy and messenger within Sierra's forces, as well as a dangerous adversary to his foes. In addition to opening portals, Tsuki found she could use the darkness as a weapon and Sierra soon began to call upon her to serve as an assassine whenever he had need of one.

The emotional trauma of taking lives when she had been trained to heal soon caused Tsuki Anei to form a protective identity to hide behind, one who could withstand the tasks set before her. Thus Shadow was born.

As Tsuki Anei, or Anei as she prefers, the young healer is incredibly sensitive to the emotions of those around her with limited empathic and psychic abilities. She is also highly attuned to celestial energies, often drawing power directly from heavenly bodies, primarily the moon. She is also blessed with the Sight and often has visions of the future, both waking and dreaming.

As Shadow, she is cold and aloof, not necessarily evil but intensely loyal to Sierra. In this guise she is only barely aware of their shared blood and does not really think of him as her brother as much as her Liege Lord. While it generally goes against her nature, Shadow will not hesitate to kill for Lord Hisama but she will only follow his exact orders, more out of a sense of honor and a personal code than through any wish to aide his enemies. The one exception in this is when her Lord is in danger. Shadow shares a limited psychic bond that allows her to sense when Sierra is threatened and will not hesitate to act on his defense, regardless of the odds.

Life continued peacefully for Anei and Shadow with both finding fulfillment serving Sierra to the best of their abilities until her seventeenth birthday. Sierra, who had become obsessed with a quest for immortality and power, became addicted to the Mako he had been injecting himself with, hoping to enhance his powers. While Anei did everything within her power to try and convince her brother to allow her to cleanse the poison from his blood, Sierra spurned her offer and began a rapid spiral into madness. Shadow and Anei could do little more than watch, the young healer's clairvoyant powers telling both of them that Sierra's death was drawing steadily closer. She never dreamed that she would fall in love with the man that would kill her brother and Lord.

Tsuki Anei learned that her brother had captured some of the rebels that had dared to oppose him and her vows as a healer led her to offer what assistance she could. Seeking to heal his physical injuries, Anei had her first encounter with Reno Marrin. Anei found herself attracted to the flame-haired captive and was touched by his obvious concern for his friends, who were also being held in her brother's cells. At his request, she agreed to bring him word on their condition and was the first to discover that his lady-love, Riya was apparently possessed by another spirit. Realizing that Riya's soul might already be lost, Anei had Shadow take Tseng, to Riya's cell, hoping that his powers as Lord Ruina's son would be able to aide her. While guiding him through the Shadow Realm, they were waylaid by the Demon Belais and only escaped with the aide of the Dragon Lords Ruina and Valitra. Distraught from the events that had occurred around her, Anei left Tseng with Riya and returned to Reno. She had merely wished to bring him news of his friend and love but when he sought to comfort her, the two wound up as lovers.

Soon after, Shadow took Reno to Wutai to join with Sirius Branford and Silvara Aerindale while her own sense of honor forced her to return to her brother. Driven by honor and love, Anei confessed her betrayal to her brother who, acting under a Mako influenced rage, retaliated by trying to whip her to death. Reno sensed Anei's agony and called upon his father, the Dragon Lord Saga, to take him to her side where he beheld Sierra whipping her unconscious, blood-covered body. Enraged, Anubis, in the form of the crimson Dragon Wolf, destroyed Sierra and devoured his heart. Anei had regained consciousness during the attack and recognized Reno in his altered state but bound to her bed she could do nothing but watch as her lover kill her brother.

Anei's mind was nearly shattered by the gruesome spectacle but thanks to the Dragoness Valitra, her physical wounds were healed. Her mental anguish however, was only abated when Shadow decided to allow Reno to erase the memory from the healer's mind, forbidding him to touch her own memories. Anei had forgotten that Reno had murdered her brother, indeed she was not even aware of Sierra's death, and for the young healer's sake, Shadow tried to bear Anei's love for Reno. However, Shadow's hatred for Reno soon began to destroy her resolution to place Anei's happiness before her own, eventually leading her to attack Reno and take full control of the body. Now, obeying the Demon Belais, Shadow serves as bodyguard for Silvara Aerindale, protecting Valitra's daughter and dreaming of the day when she will seek vengeance for her Lord's death.
