Background: Rufus was born into the wealthy family of ShinRa. His Mother, Shea ShinRa, was killed by his Father, Arthur ShinRa's order. He has also a sister that is almost a twin to him. She was supposed to be killed as well with his mother. She wasn't , He didn't know this and doesn't even remember he had a sister anymore.

When he turned 10 he started training with the SOLDIERS that served his Father's company ShinRa Inc. By Age 15 he was training with the Turks and could beat any SOLDIER, with the exception of The General, Sephiroth. He then met Raven Bladeheart when he was around 15 as well...they spent three years together, before his Father decided to send him away to an Island compound off the coast of Mideel. He spent three years there as well, discovering his feline bodyguard and friend, Dark Nation, on this Island. He left when Scarlet came and told him of his Father's death by the hands of Sephiroth.

During and After the Meteor, He ran ShinRa Inc. as its President. He was assumed dead when DIAMOND WEAPON fired on his office and destroyed it. He wasn't killed though and when the meteor came he was outside on the Plate of Midgar. A metal Beam from the ShinRa building fell in the chaos and havoc caused by HOLY and Meteor and struck him to the ground breaking his spine and cracking his skull. He died then on the Plate in Midgar, But JENOVA after her defeat at AVALANCHE's hands left Sephiroth and rescued the President of ShinRa Inc., ripping him back out of the lifestream she forced his spirit back into his body and healed most of the damage the beam had done.

When he woke from this he didn't remember what had happened after he had been struck by the beam. He was still in danger of dying again though and she called her other servant, Simon Hojo, to pick Rufus up and carry him to a house that was still mostly standing. After which he used his doctoring skills to stop his bleeding and set the few bones she hadn't healed the first time. She then went on to heal the rest of his injuries. Hojo disappeared, and Rufus woke inside the house alone and though some accidents found out that he was seemingly like Sephiroth in the fact that an injury from a shard of glass , and then later metal healed up before his eyes. That was when JENOVA first spoke to him, but the situation was too much for him and he collapsed and his memory blocked out the entire incident. He found Dark Nation again and he left Midgar to head for his Mansion in Junon. On his way to Junon, he had stopped in Kalm to rest and for supplies for the trip across the mountains to Junon. When he was there he found out about Sierra. He was furious that someone else had taken over what he considered to be his power, and Continent, So he set out for Junon, with a new goal. Kill Sierra, and take back his power, In a nutshell he was going to make ShinRa rise again after killing his rival.

In Junon he met up with an old friend by the name of Fenris Nothgalea, or as he was calling himself now, Ferris Northgale. He then met up with Raven once again and was drawn into a group of mercenaries. He rescued Raven with the aid of three of the Turks, Reno, Elena, and Rude. Before the night was over Reeve and Tseng had somehow found them as well, a plan was made then carried out to over take the Junon ShinRa Building. With Tseng Roen's and the Bounty Hunter Silvara Aerindale's help they were successful.

After broadcasting that he was still alive and still in control of Junon, He found that Scarlet was still alive had tried to kill Raven. He rescued Raven and then hunted Scarlet down and killed her. After this the party of Raiders rested for a while until another past demon came onto the scene. Siiro had been hired by Sierra, and had received a special kind of materia. He was then able to change his appearance to look exactly like any person he had seen before. Therefore he went a made trouble for Raven when both her and Rufus were inside his apartment, in the ShinRa Building. After he had gotten everyone angry, he then left and watched in sadistic glee as the real Raven received the backlash from the havoc he had caused.

He then pretended to be Rufus, firing everyone up and setting them against him and then once again after stroking the fire hot enough he left, to await the "real" Rufus to come a receive the backlash from this new fire he has created. The fire burned even hotter as the "real" Rufus lashed out in response to the burning he received from the others. To push Rufus over the edge of sane judgment Siiro went into the room once more this time as Tseng and goaded Rufus into finally losing his temper and going after him with intent to maim if not kill Tseng. Unfortunately Rufus found the “real” Tseng who had no idea why Rufus was so pissed off at him.

Rufus unleashed a limit break against Tseng, Rufus's Fury. When he succeeded in breaking Tseng's nose, Tseng fought back against the berserk President by unleashing his own limit, Dragon's Rage. The magic attack at the end of Tseng's limit and the strike of a dagger across his face knocked Rufus out of his fury and back into sane reasoning. JENOVA made a second appearance then and spoke calmly to Rufus while she healed the slash that went across his face and one eye. Raven then showed back up and after a bit of talking Rufus asked her to marry him, to which she told him yes. The situation was then blown back to hell as Siiro kidnapped Elena, and stuffed her into a closet. He then became Elena and tried to kill Raven and Rufus. This attack was stopped by Silvara who threw one of her daggers and caught Siiro in the hand with it. He fled and meanwhile Sephiroth, sane once again, made an appearance.

Shortly after, Raven disappeared, Elena was found, and Raven reappeared with the materia that had caused so much trouble. She showed everyone what Siiro had done. Amends were made, but it wasn't over yet...a misunderstanding brought another fight almost resulting in Tseng's death. Dark Nation reappeared and healed Tseng at Rufus's order. Later she left with Silvara to find Siiro's brother and was attacked and almost killed. Raven discovered what the materia truly was and ran with Rufus right behind her. They traveled up to the rooftop of the building to discover Siiro...there was a brief fight which Siiro lost to Raven. They tied him up when the other came up, more misunderstanding resulted in more fighting. When the fighting died down, Fenris / Ferris was down hurt badly, by Rufus's ultimate limit break, ShinRa's Cry.

Then JENOVA struck at Rufus's mind and made him believe that Raven had been killed by Fenris. She also had him believe that both Tseng and Reno, his best friends as well as protectors had been killed by Silvara. He struck out at everyone using a skill JENOVA presented to him, Shock Wave. He then ran away from the rooftop down into the building and into a tunnel they had used to get inside the building in the first place. Silvara chased him down and they fought inside the tunnel. The fight ended when Raven with Elena and Rude came up the tunnel from the ShinRa Building following Silvara. Rufus used Silvara's own magic shield against her, it increased the power of the attack he had used against her very tenfold. He then ran away and went to the beach beside the ocean, not far from his mansion.

Raven found him there and convinced him that she was indeed alive, and she proved herself to him by reciting a poem he had made for her when they were together in Midgar before Meteor. JENOVA attacked Raven and Rufus both and Raven and JENOVA fought. With Rufus's help Raven defeated JENOVA and banished her from the material realm. Things started to slowly settle until Sephiroth came after Rufus. JENOVA using Rufus took Sephiroth back into the insanity that had ruled him before. Sephiroth then attacked Rufus and kidnapped Raven, taking her to the ruins of Midgar. Rufus was found by the others and taken back inside by Tseng and Silvara. Silvara also freed Reno from the time freeze spell JENOVA had cast on him when he came to check on Raven and Rufus. Rufus then later cleaned himself up and made a beeline for Midgar to rescue Raven. The others soon discovered his disappearance and followed him to Midgar.

Before their arrival, Rufus fought with Sephiroth, while Raven once again held back JENOVA. Rufus defeated Sephiroth and had turned his back on him to check on Raven when Sephiroth got back up intent on impaling Rufus on the Masamune. Raven saw his intent though and placed herself in front of the blade. She died in Rufus's arms and he started to slowly slip back into JENOVA's waiting arms. The others showed up then and Silvara and Fenris saved Raven, by bringing her spirit back to her body. They then left Midgar for Kalm.

Then a fact that was revealed by Tseng to Silvara made the Bounty Hunter come after him with the intent to kill him. She was stopped by Raven. Soon though Tseng came onto the scene and spoke with her and when he didn't get a positive response he hit her across the shoulders making her fall to the floor. This didn't stop her though and she readied herself to make another attack that would've killed everyone in that wing of the hotel they were staying in. But Ferris had showed up and the jewel he wore around his neck was glowing to warn the that there was a danger to his life, even though he was still a couple feet behind Tseng, who still stood in the doorway.

Silvara realized what she had been about to do and then looked up to see Dark Nation snarl at her and cast a Bolt3 spell on her. Tseng though saw what was about to happen and leapt at Silvara shoving her out of the way and becoming the victim of the spell. Silvara fled then, and Rufus ordered Dark Nation to cast another of his limits, Dark Nation's Light. This healed Tseng, who after finding Silvara gone, followed after her. Rufus then sat down and watched Kalm out of the window in his room. He notice Raven left once, and also noticed briefly when Ferris brought her back.

It was then JENOVA struck again indirectly. She took his thoughts about what Silvara had said to him earlier and twisted them around to make him begin to think suicidal thoughts. As a result of her magic the black suit he had worn from Junon turned white. He left Raven and Dark Nation behind in the hotel room with his white trench coat. Taking out one of the chocobos he rode after Silvara. He followed her and Tseng's tracks to a small seemingly hidden town called Haven.

In Haven he learned that a group of veterans from the "Endless War" had attacked and almost killed Tseng. Upon learning this JENOVA used her influence to have Rufus use another attack of her making, Khiaron Dhar. This fire-based attack leveled the town and killed all whom lived in it, in a matter of minutes. Having killed his own mount with this attack, he walked into the woods leaving behind the ruins of Haven. He found Silvara laying with Tseng in a burnt out cabin. He woke her and spoke to her.

When she told she didn’t wish to fight anymore, JENOVA pushed him into attacking them bolt with a very weak Shock Wave. Angered that Rufus had attacked them, Silvara struck out at Rufus who took the blow without defending himself at all. He fell to the ground painfully and died. JENOVA was then freed from the web of power that had been woven when Raven and Rufus first fought her in Junon, and then strengthened in Midgar.

JENOVA mocked Silvara and thanked her for freeing her. She then split Rufus's soul into three parts. One part, the coldness that he had used to protect himself with after he had been forced to leave Raven the first time was kept inside the body. The other two parts were left to return to the Lifestream. The third and smallest part, which was Rufus as a five-year old child stayed away and in the physical realm. This part of him had been inside since it had died away when he watched his father order his mother and sister killed. The second part, the true soul of Rufus ShinRa had almost returned to the Lifestream once again, until he was held back by Raven's spirit and then pulled back to the physical realm.

JENOVA healed Rufus's body and revived it. Her magic made his hair grow longer than it had been and she also replaced his black suit he had wore before. He made a threat to Silvara and then left his now waist length hair blowing slightly in the wind. He would kill Sierra, which had been his goal before he had been reunited with Raven and the others. JENOVA stayed for a few more minutes and spoke with them before leaving as well.

Rufus's spirit was then made aware of what had happened and it was made clear they had to have a plan to stop JENOVA from carrying out her plans. The child spirit was called Nicolas, which was Rufus's middle name. Vincent then came on the scene and soon things proceeded and the party left once again for Junon.
